DAVID A. RIOS

David A. Rios is a Colombian / Norwegian artist working and living in Bergen, Norway. He works in various mediums, often serially, with photographic and graphic techniques, sculpture, and installation.

Rios has a philosophical, empirical, and academic approach to his practice. He wonders and raises questions, researches, experiments, deconstructs and - from that - reconstructs. He reshapes things otherwise known to us and brings new perspectives to light. He has worked with making visible what is not visible; sound, motion, and empty spaces or holes, for example. Rios mostly works in projects, in which he investigates a certain phenomenon, material, or object. In this way, there is a conceptual dimension to his works, which are incredibly time consuming. For one work, for instance, he created paper from pinetree himself and brought out color from its pH-value. His orientation towards detail is clear and consistent, and though not immediately visible, Rios’ process really adds to his works. They are detailed on a practical, material level as well as on an intellectual, philosophical level.

Rios holds a Master in fine art from Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KMD). He has worked as assistant professor in sculpture and installation at Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KMD). He now works as associate professor at Bergen School of Architecture. He has had several solo exhibitions, group shows, and public commissions. He is represented in museums as well as public and private collections.
