Office wall x jan freuchen
Four new embroidery works by Jan Freuchen on view in our office. All four paraphrasing Brudeferden i Hardanger (The Bridal Procession on the Hardangerfjord) by Tidemand and Gude.
Freuchen has made these works by cutting up already existing embroideries into fragments and reassembling them. The embroideries themselves are (most likely) made by women in and for their homes. They are made from patterns with different levels of detail, but some individual traits like colorwork stand out as visual signatures of their makers. Cutting up these embroideries, Freuchen plays around with a category of images that are not seen as art. Cutting them up, building new images of the same motif with the same parts, he elevates them, frames and defines them as artworks. Not without comment or irony, though.
